I Just Don’t Feel Like It: How to Motivate YourselfBy DONNA M. WHITE, LMHC, CACP

Let’s be honest, we all have some time where we just don’t feel like it.  The “it” may be going to work, tackling a project, completing chores, helping the kids with homework, or just getting out of the bed.  Whatever the “it” is, sometimes we just don’t feel like doing it.

I’ve been in this slump lately.  I’ve noticed that often when I’m unmotivated, I’m usually overwhelmed. Being overwhelmed is just one reason for being unmotivated.  Not sleeping well can often be a reason for lack of motivation. Other reasons include, but are not limited to: stress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, feel of failure, or just disinterest in the task at hand.

It should be noted that if you experience lack of motivation for an extended period of time with no or infrequent breaks, you may wish to talk to your physician as it could be a sign of other conditions.

Whatever your reason for your lack of motivation, there are ways to get it back. These simple solutions may get you motivated in no time.

  • Weigh the cost of not getting the task done.
When you can’t think of a reasons to get up and get moving, think of what will happen if you don’t.  When we evaluate the costs of not getting something done the answer is usually something negative. If you’re not motivated to exercise, the costs could include gaining weight or health issues.  If you’re not motivated to go to work, the cost could include getting further behind.

  • Hang around inspiring, motivated people.
If I’m feeling lazy it sure doesn’t help if I’m hanging around other lazy people.  Surround yourself with other people who are motivated to do things.

  • Look at the benefits and not the difficulties.
When faced with a task that seems to difficult or too daunting, it’s always beneficial to look at the benefits instead of the difficulties.  Sure, it may not be the easiest thing to accomplish, but look at what will be accomplished in the end.

  • Just jump in!
Last, but not least, just get started.  The longer you put off getting it done, the more time you have to mull over all the negative thoughts and reasons you shouldn’t do it. By just jumping in, it’s a surefire way to get started on whatever “it” is.

Writer Raymond Chandler is quoted as saying, “Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”

You know your abilities. Motivate yourself to get it done, and have a positive attitude about it.  Get up and get going!

Diabetes - we all know the importance of diet for diabetics.  One client recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes was advised to lose weight by the diabetic clinic.  The situation was compounded by the indication that blood pressure levels were approaching levels indicative of a further problem.  Initial discussions with the client identified that:

1. they ate erratically, missing some meals and having others as and when.
2. they had difficulty in refusing foods that were not good for diabetes or weight loss.
3. family members had commented that the client always finished eating first.
4. client was aware that their intake of fluids, particularly water, was very low.
5. admitted a dislike of fruit and vegetables.

Under hypnosis a programme of red cross and green tick was put in place.  The client was asked to imagine a table laden with high calorie, sweet, high salt and high fat content products and place a large red cross on top of this as a sign that these foods should be eaten sparingly.  A similar process was used with a second table which was laden with fruit, vegetables, pulses, low fat, low salt foods which were described as being helpful for weight loss and providing the essential vitamins and minerals and an explanation given that these foods were beneficial both for weight loss and general health.  A green tick was planted above this table.

Still under hypnosis the importance of regular meals was made as was the importance of regular fluid intake especially water and that there was no need to snack between meals.  Further, to deal with the speedy eating the client was advised to put down his knife and fork between mouthfuls and to chew the food.  This would increase the time taken to eat and at the same time to provide the opportunity to enjoy each mouthful.

The client has now had 2 sessions of hypnosis where the above programme was repeated and is now losing weight and eating more vegetables and fruit. Further sessions are planned to assist the client further.

A lot of people are asking about relaxation and destressing. Therapies can achieve this whether it be by reiki, hypnotherapy or EFT. The therapies will gently ease you into a state of relaxation or with EFT you can tap them away; try it and see the great benefits that you can achieve. You can even do EFT yourself; there's plenty of information available to help you do this. Get some positive energy in your life now.

I was reminded today of the power of EFT. I dealt with a client who, whilst they could swim well, had a fear of putting their head below water. We got to the root of the problem and after a few rounds of tapping their fear had substantially reduced. I have seen it for myself that the client is now able to put their head under water in the swimming pool and can in fact dive to the bottom of the pool without any fear. Well done. EFT does work to alleviate problem, fears and phobias.

EFT is similar to acupuncture and is based on energy meridians in the body.  The difference is that a finger tapping rather than needles is applied at specific points on the body.  The client is shown how to carry out this tapping procedure for themselves and the end product being the release of "blockages" caused by the phobia or problem the patient is suffering.

I had a client with a phobia of hypodermic syringes which was shown to be rooted in a bad medical experience as a child and after only 3 applications of the tapping procedure totally lost the phobia.  This was shown to be permanent when he was shown several hypodermic syringes 3 months later with no fear apparent.  He has no problems now with having injections.

I took the opportunity to attend a seminar today on CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) which proved to be extremely interesting.

The technique is simplicity itself and can be used in isolation or linked with EFT (emotional freedom technique) and hypnotherapy treatments, so offering additional support for clients.

I was particularly impressed because the technique enables the client through conversations with their therapist to describe their problems and to a large extent with therapist support to identify the root cause.  This in no way diminishes the client therapist relationship but offers the client a greater input.  This is a great tool for the therapists 'tool bag' and one definitely to be used.
